Directrice des Admissions
Barbara Shelsky
Barbara is the Director of Admissions and Human Resources. Born and raised in Paris, Barbara is a native French speaker. She graduated from La Sorbonne in 1995 with a Master’s degree in management and human resources, and from L’Institut de Gestion Social (IGS-RH) with an MBA with a focus on human resources. Moving to New York from France in 2000, Barbara employed her degrees first in restaurant management and then in fashion retail. In both the hospitality industry and her years in fashion retail, she made customer relations the hallmark of her career. Her involvement in the PS58 PTA as a mother of two bilingual daughters, sparked an interest in education as a means and an end, to put her vast wealth of hospitality bona fides to more substantive use.

Smith Street Arts et Lettres
Founder and Executive Director
Olivia Ramsey
Olivia is the founder and Executive Director of Smith Street Workshop and Smith Street Maternelle as well as the Head of School at Smith Street Arts & Lettres. After graduating with a dual-degree in French and Psychology, she worked as the assistant director to Earlham College’s semester abroad programs in Paris and in Fort-de-France, Martinique. She completed her Master’s degree at Bank Street College of Education, and taught for ten years in New York, beginning at the Downtown Little School, moving on to the Lycée Français de New York, and finally ending up as one of the founding teachers of PS 58's French dual language program in Carroll Gardens. In the fall of 2013, Olivia started a small tutoring practice out of her apartment on Smith Street. To meet the growing demand for tutoring and academic enrichment in Brooklyn, she founded Smith Street Workshop in 2015 followed shortly thereafter by opening Smith Street Maternelle, a French immersion preschool program. Understanding the need for continuity in dual language education, Olivia opened Smith St. Arts & Lettres in 2021. Before her career as an educator, Olivia studied French and traveled extensively abroad. She deepened her knowledge of French by being immersed in the culture, making lifelong French-speaking friends, and by being an active participant in the French/American community here in Brooklyn.
